Built-in book cases beside the fireplace can be a nice addition. How about surround sound with speakers mounted in the ceiling and walls. A nice big plasma screen over the fireplace is a nice touch. It was popular for years to use stain grade wood and stain it a dark color with a polyurethane finish. Hardwood floors were the rule of the day. You can get one model with built in shades that are controlled with a wall switch or a hand held remote. This is nice if you have a lot of direct sun on that part of the house. If you have attic above the family room a sun tunnel might be best. This is a round tube that attaches to the room and has a tunnel made of highly reflective material to allow the light to be reflected into the room. This works well where you have a dark room with little natural light coming into it. Even a bathroom with no windows is a great place for a sun tunnel. They also have an option for a light to be installed up in the tunnel for artificial light at night. Many times we will install a whole bank of sky lights giving you almost a glass ceiling. Some skylights are operable meaning they open and close to allow air to come in. They even make one that you can go out of in case of an emergency. The old bubble skylights that used to be popular are very energy inefficient and very poorly constructed. Velux has skylights designed to replace these. If skylights are installed correctly they will give you years of great service without any problems. A good time to install them is while re-roofing your home. This allows for an easier flashing job on the skylights which is very important.
